Abbot Hong Fa (? ¨D1917)

Master Hong Fa was the 3rd abbot. He used to be a monk in the Tianmu Mountain, Zhejiang Province before he came to Shanghai. At the death of Master Ben Zhao, Master Hong Fa was recommended as abbot with the help of many masters, such as Master Ye Kai of the Tianning Monastery in Changzhou and Master Ji Nan of the Xianglin Monastery in Nanjing, and so on. Master Hong Fa had jade Buddha statues moved to a rented house which is on today¡¯s Huaian Road. Master Ye Kai was a well-known Chan monk in modern times. He once presided over a Buddhist ceremony of chanting Buddha¡¯s name in the Jade Buddha Monastery, and attracted many celebrities in Shanghai, which brought an outstanding fame to the temple since then. In 1917, Master Hong Fa passed away.
