| Master
Ke Cheng was the fourth abbot of the monastery.
His dharma name was Da Gao, from Zhenjiang, Jiangsu
Province. In the twenty-seventh year of Guangxu
in the Qing dynasty (1901), when he was twelve
years old, he went to the Helin Temple in the
village to ask for ordination without informing
his parents. His parents tried in vain to persuade
him to give up his attempt. However, Master Ke
Cheng persisted in his will. When his parents
understood his insistence, they could do nothing
but agree him to be ordained in the Lingjiu Temple
in his own town. In 1905, he went to Mt. Baohua
to follow Master Hao Jing to attain full ordination
(upasampad). Thereupon, he was diligent in his
study of Buddhist sutras, strict in his observance
of disciplines and constant in his practice. In
the spring of 1912, he went to study in the Jiangtian
Monastery in Zhenjiang. In the following five
years, he took charge of every main post in succession.
Then, he was given dharma in the Xianglin Monastery,
Nanjing and regarded highly by Masters Ji Nan
and Mi Xiu. In the autumn of 1917, Master Hong
Fa passed away and Master Ke Cheng received order
to succeed him as the abbot of the Jade Buddha
Temple. With the help of the elder noble-minded
monks as Masters Ye Kai and Ji Nan, he got a piece
of land 11.6 mu (one mu equals to 1/15 hectare)
on the Binlang Road ( Anyuan Road today), where
today¡¯s Jade Buddha Monastery lies. A new temple
was started in 1918 and finished six years later.
Then Jade Buddha Temple was renamed as the Jade
Buddha Chan Monastery. In 1929, Master Ke Cheng
initiated China Buddhist Society in Shanghai together
with Buddhists in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang
and other provinces and was an executive member.
In June of the same year, he was elected as an
executive member of Shanghai Buddhist Society.
