| Abbot Zhen Hua (1909¨D1947) |
| The
sixth abbot was Master Zhen Hua, from Xinghua,
Jiangsu Province. His family name was Tang, first
name Quan Xin, and his dharma name was Cheng Shi.
His parents died when he was very young. At the
age of 11, he became a monk and followed an elder
Master Huai Lian in the Yuantong Temple in his
hometown. Then the elder master sent him to a
private school, where he often behaved outstandingly.
He showed his interest in ancient and modern anecdotes,
in addition he drew orchids and bamboo. In the
spring of 1926, Master Zhen Hua¡¯s grand master,
Elder Master Shuang Ting found him intelligent
and asked him to study in the Yushan Buddhist
College in the Chaoan Temple of Zhenjiang under
the guidance of Master Shou Pei. The Yushan Buddhist
College was founded by Master Shou Pei in the
autumn of 1925 and made great contributions to
the revival of Buddhism in modern time. In 1942,
Master Zhen Hua was invited to take charge of
the Shanghai Buddhist College and succeeded the
abbot of Jade Buddha Monastery in May that year.
He edited a monthly named Subtle Dharmacakra (Sridharmacakra)
in the monastery in January 1943 and organized
the Commemorative Association of Master Hong Yi
in the same year. After the victory of Anti-Japanese
War, he quitted the post of abbot to engage himself
in the Buddhist research. In 1947, he passed away.
His works are as following: Who¡¯s who¡ªthe
renowned figures of Chinese Buddhism, The History
of Safeguarding Homeland by Sangha, A Sequel to
Biographies of Nuns, A History of Buddhism in
Xinghua Country and Al History of Buddhism in
Tai Country.
