1984

In spring, the monastery held a ceremony of seven-day preaching of Avatamsaka-sutra. Master Zhen Chan gave lectures on the Chapter of Practice and Prayer of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra.

The American first lady Nancy Reagan visited the monastery.

In November, at the invitation of Indian Cultural Ministry, Master Zhen Chan led a delegation of China Buddhist Association to visit India.

1985

In January, Shanghai Buddhist Association held its fifth congress. Master Zhen Chan continued to hold the post of chairman.

In spring, the monastery set up rites and taught disciplines for the first time. More than 600 Buddhists from 24 provinces and cities attained full ordination from Master Zhen Chan.

The monastery held the opening ceremony for all the Buddha statues.

In August, Shanghai Mayor Jiang Zemin inspected the monastery.

1986

In May, Master Zhen Chan took up the post of member of the Council of Shanghai Overseas Friendship Association.
