In September, Indian Premier's wife visited the monastery.

In October, Master Zhen Chan was elected abbot of the Jingan Ancient Monastery.

In April, a group headed by Master Xing Yun from Taiwan for developing Buddhism and visiting the relatives in the mainland visited the monastery.

In July, Master Zhen Chan brought back a big jade reclining Buddha statue from Singapore and enshrined in the Sleeping Buddha Hall in the monastery.

The Tenth Penchen Lama passed away. A mourning hall was set up in the monastery. Jiang Zemin, secretary of Shanghai Municipal Committee of the CPC, and Zhu Rongji, Shanghai mayor came to offer condolence.

Shanghai Buddhist Association held the 6th congress, and Master Zhen Chan continued to be the chairman.
