¡¾HISTORY OF MONASTERY¡¿

In March 1949, Abbot Wei Yi offered to resign in the hard time and recommended Master Wei Fang as the abbot. Soon the new China was founded.

In October 1949, the People¡¯s Republic of China was founded, and then the Jade Buddha Monastery developed on the new road.

In 1952, Shanghai Municipal Government allocated money to renovate the Jade Buddha Monastery and restore the original appearance of this well-known monastery in Shanghai to protect the religious freedom of common people even if the government was in need of money for restoration of national economy and economic development. With the encouragement of the government, the monastery began again to offer lectures on Buddhist sutras and principles. In December of that year, Shanghai Buddhist circle held the peace assembly to pray for the world peace in the Jade Buddha Monastery and masters gave lectures on the Buddhist teachings and sutras. They invited ten masters, including Eminent Master Xu Yun of modern Chinese Chan Sect, Masters Yuan Ying, Ying Ci, Chi Song, Wei Fang and some others, to give lectures on the Buddhist sutras in turn. The assembly lasted for ninety-nine days and that is a great gathering in the Shanghai Buddhist history.

After the assembly, the elder Master Xu Yun stayed in the monastery to hold seven-day meditation and to be the head of the cultivation.

In 1957, the elder Master Ying Ci of Huayan gave lectures on eighty chapters of Avatamsaka Sutra in the Jade Buddha Monastery.

On 8th January 1963, Premier Zhou Enlai accompanied Madam Srimao Bandalanack, Ceylon (Sri Lanka today) Prime Minister to the Jade Buddha Monastery and invited 64 Buddhist masters to hold the memorial ceremony in memory of the 64th birthday of her passed-away husband. Premier Zhou talked with the masters amiably and listened to the introduction of the monastery. Premier said: ¡°This is a pretty good monastery, and it should be well managed and protected.¡± The Premier¡¯s instruction has been the guiding principle for the monastic activities for long.
