In
December 1995, Abbot Zhen Chan
died a heart attack. However,
the monastery could not go on
normally without an abbot a
day. His disciple, Master Jue
Xing was supported by the masters
of the old generation in the
Jade Buddha Monastery, lay Buddhists
and the staff of the monastic
affairs office and shouldered
the task of managing the whole
monastery in the capacity of
the monastic affairs office
director. Through over four
years of practice and tests,
Master Jue Xing displayed his
talents and made great progress
in the political awareness,
religious belief, monastic management
as well as diplomatic relations.
In November 1999, the masters
of the monastery elected Master
Jue Xing the 11th abbot. At
present, Master Jue Xing, supported
fully by the municipal nationality
and religious affairs committee
is leading the members of the
monastic affairs office, unites
the masters and staff and upholds
firmly the patriotic banner
and policy of
love of Buddhism to walk on
the road that conforms to socialist
society. The Jade Buddha Monastery
today offers weekly lectures,
sets up the Hong Yi Library
and publishes the Juequn Quarterly.
At the same time, the monastery
actively provides better conditions
for the Buddhist studies and
disseminates the Buddhist culture
to promote the consciousness
of patriotism and love of Buddhism
of the disciples in the monastery.
With the coming
of the new century, the monastery
designed a blueprint for the
development. Supported by the
People¡¯s Government of Putuo
District and the relevant departments,
the Jade Buddha Monastery will
be renovated and enlarged on
a big scale. Within two or three
years, it will build a preaching
hall with modern equipments,
the Hong Yi Library will be
equipped with computerized management,
different facilities for Buddhist
cultural study and activities
will be in place, thus the whole
look of the monastery will be
greatly improved.
