On
the 18th of May, 2000, in the International
Civil Rights Affairs Office of the
Congress at the Capitol Hill of Washington
D.C. of the United States, in the
talk with three American officials,
a Chinese monk in red kasaya said
the following words: ¡°China and the
United States have different history,
which is one of the causes for differences
between our understanding of things.
Our China is an ancient country of
civilization with long history and
brilliant culture, while the United
States is a young country with only
two or three hundred years of history.
Therefore, when we consider the same
question, one usually views it from
the point of history, the other views
it from the fact, thus we have different
understanding. We need mutual respect
to think of such a difference. ¡®Non-interference
of the internal affairs of other countries¡¯
is a principle that can help to solve
satisfactorily such dispute.¡±
This monk is Master
Jue Xing, abbot of the Jade Buddha
Monastery, vice chairman of Shanghai
Buddhist Association. He and Bai Runsheng,
chairman of Shanghai Islamic Association
were visiting the United States as
¡°international visitors¡± at the invitation
of the State Department of the United
States.
In China, the history
of Buddhism is also a long historical
scroll painting of Buddhist correspondence
to the Chinese culture and society.
The salvation spirit of ¡°great causeless
pity, and great fellow compassion¡±
coincides practically with the Chinese
traditional virtue of sharing comforts
and hardships through the history.
On the 1st of December
2000, in Shanghai Plaza Theatre, Eternal
Memory¡ªThe Buddhist Concert for the
Fifth Anniversary of Master Zhen Chan's
passing away was held in the top artistic
performance hall. Leaders of Shanghai
Municipal National and Religious Affairs
Committee and Shanghai Charity Foundation
attended the concert.
