Devotion of His Heart and Soul to People and Buddhism
------ Interview with Master Jue Xing, Abbot of the Jade Buddha Monastery

Jue Xing, only over twenty years old, is profound in Buddhist knowledge, attracting the Buddhist disciples overseas. They asked surprisingly: who says the mainland of China suppressed the religious freedom?

His global visits in exchange with world Buddhist disciples enlightened Jue Xing to have a new understanding of Buddhism in the present China and the advantageous conditions for the development of Buddhism in Shanghai. Chinese Buddhism grew in the very long feudal society. By the end of the 19th century, Buddhism had developed for about 1800 or 1900 years, once a brilliant page in the history of Chinese culture. However, from the beginning of the 20th century, the tangled warfare of the warlords, the Japanese invasion, and the civil war in succession plunged the whole China and Chinese Buddhism into sufferings. The estates of monasteries were encroached or deprived, the monks and nuns became homeless, and the Buddhist sutras scattered overseas, etc. It is in the new era of the opening and reform that Chinese Buddhism began truly to prosper.

Under the guidance of Master Zhen Chan,Master Jue Xing made constant progress in Buddhist knowledge and disciplines. At the same time, he began to take some duties in the management of the monastery. He was once the director of storehouse, superintendent, and vice director of the monastic affairs office.Master Jue Xing, who dedicated himself to people and Buddhism only for expression of his gratitude to Buddha, won the praise widely from the monks. And he traveled widely throughout the country to the Wutai Mountain, the Putuo Mountain, the Jiuhua Mountain, Lhasa, Xigaze and Labrabg Lamasery in Gansu Province to learn more about Buddhism.

At the beginning of 1990s, Jue Xing attracted attention of several eminent Buddhist masters in China. Up to now, Master Jue Xing still has a clear memory of that evening, when Master Zhen Chan asked him: ¡°Do you truly treat Buddhism as your cause or as a spring board? I give you two choices: one is to serve the Buddha all your life, one is to return to your secular life immediately, and perhaps you can have a bright future.¡±Master Jue Xing¡¯s answered: ¡°life could only exist in the world and in the net of human life. I will break away from all the secular life, such as interests, money, ethical principles, ultimately I will break away from the net of life existence. With your care and help, I will not let you disappointed for I have learned and understood more comprehensively about the Buddhist predecessors.¡±
