Devotion of His Heart and Soul to People and Buddhism
------ Interview with Master Jue Xing, Abbot of the Jade Buddha Monastery

Over a year has passed, what progress has the Jade Buddha Monastery under the abbot Jue Xing made in its development and construction?

The abbot¡¯s answer is: ¡°My guiding principle can be expressed in two sentences:¡®inheritance of the tradition, and adaptation to modernity¡¯. Buddhism has existed in China for over two thousand years and has a profound influence on Chinese culture. We should carry on and develop the fine traditions of Buddhism. With times passing, society changes constantly, Buddhism should also develop with the support of science and technology.¡±

¡°Therefore, the Jade Buddha Monastery has introduced such modern management system as computer system, security system of monitor and control, and so on.¡±

¡°¡®To be the model monastery¡¯ is the idea greatly advocated by Master Zhen Chan when he was alive. We are trying to improve the quality of the masters through ¡°emphasizing the quality of the masters in the monastery, and building up the image of the monastery to the society¡±. We have had a variety of training courses like computer, foreign language, and classes like Buddhists in-service training, Meditation for Chan, Buddhism music (Brahma Music), etc. Lectures in Jue Qun Auditorium are not only given by the masters of the monastery, but also by some very famous scholars like Professor Wang Leiquan from the College of Philosophy, FuDan University, Dean Ye Luhua from the Institute of Religions, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. Most of the audiences are Buddhists. Our Buddhist orchestra is composed of masters and Buddhist believers. The famous composer Lv Qiming composed a tune called Morning Bells and Evening Drums¡¡±
