First
of all, thank you very much for
your acceptance of our interview.
The Shanghai Jade Buddha Monastery
is well known both at home and
abroad. Its activities easily
attract attention from different
sides. You are the first abbot
of the Jade Buddha Monastery in
the 21st century, one of the few
young abbots of famous monasteries.
Many people like to know about
you? Can you talk first about
the cause of your becoming a monk? |

 Yes.
I am a northerner. I was born
in Huludao City, Liaoning Province
and grew up in the extensive northeast
area. Because my grandmother is
a pious Buddhist disciple, I was
strongly influenced by her since
very young. Every time when she
burnt incense and worshipped Buddha
and chanted sutras, I followed
her to kowtow and kneel before
Buddha. I still remember once
my grandmother brought me to the
Jade Buddha Monastery to worship
Buddha and I met the old masters,
such as Xin Yi, Guang Xing and
others. When they saw me a child,
so devout to worship Buddha, it
seemed to be predestined that
I would enter the door of Buddhism,
and they paid special attention
to me. They held my hands, touched
my ears and even asked me whether
I was willing to be a monk, and
so on. At that time, I was too
young to understand what they
said to me. After that, as I grew
up, I was imperceptibly influenced
by what I saw and heard. Gradually
I had an understanding from vagueness
to clarity about Buddhism. Especially
after I read the story of Buddha,
I admired Buddha from the bottom
of my heart and many great Buddhist
masters. Then I became willing
to be a monk, I would like to
be the same enlightened man as
Buddha. This wish strongly haunted
me until one day when I finally
became a young monk. Now I recall
about this experience, I feel
indeed a kind of special relation
with the Jade Buddha Monastery.
Now I have lived in the monastery
for such a long time that I cherish
a deep, strong and passionate
affection for it, and I have already
taken it as my second home in
my life. |
