Q: Since you entered into the Buddhist College, you had become the acolyte of Master Zhen Chan. When Master Zhen Chan passed away suddenly, there appeared some complex circumstance and rumors in the monastery, and how did you face it?
A: After my entering the college, Master Zhen Chan showed passionate love for me. Besides strict demands to me in different aspects, he let me be his acolyte. The respectable old man taught me in words and deeds, and I learned a lot from him. After my graduation from the college, I was assigned to be the director of storehouse and gained some experiences of management. At that time, besides my study, my greatest wish was to serve whole-heartedly Master Zhen Chan. When the old master suddenly passed away, I was struck with grief. For a period, same as many monks in the monastery, I was in deep sorrow. People in the monastery at that time were a bit loose, there were many rumors and gossips, and the monastic management seemed in a mass to a certain degree. All were at a loss, they were waiting and expecting, and did not know whom to follow. Therefore, the situation was somewhat complex. Many disciples in Taiwan and Singapore were worried about me and persuaded me to go abroad, they said they had created for me good conditions, I declined all these good-will offers without hesitation. On one hand, Master Zhen Chan reard me, while I had not made any contribution to the monastery; on the other hand, the old masters Ming Ru and Ai Pu, and elder lay Buddhist Yin Bo showed great concern about me. Those made me determined to overcome any difficulty and strive for the monastery. Therefore, I, with the help of Master Ming Ru, Master Ai Pu, the lay Buddhist Yin Bo, formed a temporal leading group of the monastic affairs at the critical juncture. We united the masters of the monastery, encouraged the free airing of views and drew on all useful opinions. I assisted the two old masters in their work, and soon the Jade Buddha Monastery got into normal order. Even so, we still followed the way of Master Zhen Chan in seeking truth and dealing with basic tasks. On the 8th August 1997, the leading group of the monastic office made a readjustment, and I became the director of the office. With the concerted efforts of the young masters of the monastic affairs office, some new changes appeared in the Jade Buddha Monastery. We renovated the vegetarian restaurant, the shop of Buddhist articles and souvenirs and toilets, etc, and improved the housing conditions of the masters. In order to regularize our management and operations, we had the staff in uniform and masters in the same yellow long gown. The spirit of the monastery took a new look, and staff and masters were united and active in their work, especially some young masters and workers. Seeing their hard working, I was full of confidence, and our monastic affairs were improved with great progresses.
