Interview
with Master Jue Xing |
| Q: |
Through four-year anneal, with the support from disciples and eminent abbots of many monasteries, you became the abbot with honor of the Jade Buddha Monastery though democratic election. At the moment of the celebration ceremony when you step onto the abbot seat, what were you thinking? And what was that you wanted to say? |
| A: |
Before
I was elected abbot, I only thought
about doing my work well earnestly
and never dreamed to be the abbot
of the Jade Buddha Monastery.
This to me before that time was
something very far. When Master
Zhen Chan was alive, I only thought
of more study and more attendance
at his side. The old master was
very strict with me in guidance
and supervision. After he passed
away, I was afraid that I became
lazy without the supervision of
the old master and worried about
the possible mistakes that I made
because of lack of experience.
So I had been reminding myself
to learn and study in modesty
and work hard and was willing
to accept criticism and advice.
Because of the support of the
masters in the monastery and trust
of the leaders, I was elected
abbot of the monastery. At the
beginning, I had some worries
that I was not competent and virtuous
enough to be the abbot and not
so erudite in Buddhism that it
was difficult for me to hold the
post. However, when I was seated
in the abbot seat, in face of
so many disciples, my heart overflowed
with a sense of solemn responsibility
and obligation suddenly. What
I wanted to say at that moment
was that I would devote myself
to Buddhism and the monastery,
which was also my expression of
gratitude to Buddha. |
