The Shanghai Jade Buddha Monastery is quite influential both at home and abroad, which direction do you think the monastery develops towards after your election? As to the development of the monastery in every aspect and Master Zhen Chan's proposition of "Striving for the Model Monastery" before his death, do you have any long-term plans or specific measures? |

 My
guiding principle can be expressed
in two points: inheritance of
tradition and adaptation to contemporary
society. Buddhism has developed
in China more than two thousand
years, bringing a profound influence
on Chinese culture, and many of
excellent traditions and styles
are worth inheriting and carrying
forward. With times passing, Chinese
society keeps changing constantly.
Buddhism should also develop by
means of science and technology.
Therefore, the Jade Buddha Monastery
has introduced such modern management
system as computer system, security
system of monitor and control,
and so on. Now we are still grounding
for the goal of "Striving for
the Model Monastery" advocated
by Master Zhen Chan before his
passing away. We train the personal
quality of the staff and masters
inside the monastery and try to
set up a good image outside, with
the purpose of promoting the quality
of the two teams of masters and
working staff. We have sponsored
computer class, foreign language
class, Buddhist further study
class, meditation class, and Buddhist
music class. At the same time,
we support and build different
Buddhist cultural facilities,
such as the Hong Yi library, resume
publication of Juequn Quarterly,
weekly Buddhist lectures,and so
on. We take it as the priority
to promote the cultural level
of the Jade Buddha Monastery,
and establish friendly relations
with outside and strengthen the
exchanges of Buddhist circles
both at home and abroad. We also
take an active part in social
charity and welfare causes to
let more people understand the
Buddhist function, duty and value
to society. It is especially important
that we should set up firm patriotism
and love of Buddhism as a younger
generation of disciples and working
staff in the monastery. We should
carry on the excellent tradition
of "listening, following and acting"
from the old generation, cater
to the new social situation continuously,
and resolutely follow the road
of conformity to the socialist
society. We will make unswerving
efforts to strive for a model
monastery. |
