Interview
with Master Jue Xing |
| Q: |
Besides the monastic management, you are the executive vice-chairman of Shanghai Buddhist association. The historical records tell us that Shanghai Buddhist circle in modern China once was the center of the whole China; even now still it is influential in Chinese Buddhist circle. What have you thought about the blueprint of development of Shanghai Buddhism? |
| A: |
After
the end of "the Cultural Revolution",
with the implementation of all
the Party's religious policies,
Shanghai Buddhism has experienced
three phases: The first is rejuvenation,
now it has been completed. The
second phase is to train a new
generation of Buddhist masters.
Now many executive masters in
Shanghai monasteries are young
monks who graduate from the Buddhist
colleges. But it is not enough,
and we still need to cultivate
research personnel. This is the
foundation for creation, development
and inheritance of the Chinese
traditional culture. Master Zhen
Chan told me when he waw alive
that to build many monasteries
is no better than to build a Buddhist
college. The respectable Zhao
Puchu also repeatedly stressed
that: the first thing is to train
personnel, the second is to train
personnel, and the third still
is to train personnel. Obviously
it is important and urgent to
train personnel. In the third
phase, we will let monasteries
play more functions, strengthen
spread of Buddhism and Buddhist
culture, and improve the qualities
of Buddhist disciples, which need
concerted efforts of all and assistance
from the society. As the reform
and opening of our country advance
in depth, Buddhism meets the favorable
opportunity for development, and
we also have the obligation to
push the development of Buddhism
and make it correspond with the
socialist society. |
