Ying Ci (1873¨D1965)¡¿
Master
Ying Ci (1873¨D1965) whose family name
was Yu and alias was Xianqin, was
from She County in Anhui Province.
He also styled himself chief lecturer
of Hua Yan (Avatamsaka). He took spread
of Hua Yan thoughts as his responsibility,
and Chan meditation as the only means
of study,and he advocated to blockprint
the three different translations of
Avatamsakasutra, and Wu
Jiao Chapter of Avatamsakasutra by
Fa Zang, The Introduction
on Mahabhasya of Avatamsakasutra
by Cheng Guan, Saddharma-pundarika-sutra,
and so forth. He was an eminent monk
of patriotism and loyal to Buddhism.
During the period of Anti-Japanese
War, he refused the invitation to
preside over Buddhist ceremonies for
Japanese invaders and their puppets
for many times. He was praised for
his love to motherland. His main works
include Brief Explanation on Hrdaya-sutra,
Correct Doctrine of Sight-Perception,
Brief Explanation on the Song of Eight-Perception
Rules, and so on.
In December, 1952,
ten masters were invited, such as
Masters Ying Ci, Yuan Ying and Chi
Song, and others to give explanation
to Vajrasutra and other sutras,
which lasted for 49 days.
On Buddha's birthday
in 1956, Masters Ying Ci, Jing Quan
and Chi Song explained Avatamsakasutra
and Bhaisajyaguru-sutra.
In 1957, Master
Ying Ci taught the whole eighty volumes
of Avatamsakasutra at the
age of 85 years old, which was the
last time in his life. (After that,
he lived in privacy, engaging in Buddhist
practice and writing.)
