Screen Wall

The Screen Wall is a unique part of the traditional Chinese architecture. The decoration of the screen wall in the Jade Buddha Monastery consists of five parts: in the middle of each part, there is a round carving brick. The carving brick in the middle of the wall is the biggest, which is a flood dragon with water gushing out of its mouth. The dragon is a divine animal in Chinese myth and has the ability of summoning wind and rain at its will. The front of the carving brick is the head of the giant dragon with ferocious features and four strong paws. From its mouth flows out a gush of clean water and clouds float around its body. The whole carving shows that the dragon is in a raging storm with clouds and water churning around. The two adjacent carving bricks form a contrast with the middle one.

In the middle of the round carving brick, a phoenix stands turning its head and around it are peonies, auspicious clouds and crags. The phoenix is, same as the dragon, an auspicious divine bird in Chinese myth. The whole phoenix carving brick looks serene and tranquil, and forms a sharp contrast with the dragon carving in an expression of calm and peace.

On the sides are the carvings of the white elephants. The elephant in Buddhism is a unique symbol, for it is said that Sakyamuni¡¯s mother in a dream saw a white elephant with six tusks entering her womb, thus she became pregnant with Sakyamuni. In the carving bricks, there is a big elephant and a small one. The big one is wearing decorations with a treasure bottle on its back, and the small one is calmly strolling.

Folk carvers complete the five carving bricks, with three different themes. The carvings are in the form of symmetrical and well-proportioned high relief with excellent artistic flavor.
