The Hall of the Four Deva-kings

The first hall in the Jade Buddha Monastery is the Hall of the Four Deva-kings, which is a two-storey hall with its gate facing the south slight by east. The three front gates of the hall are also the gates of the monastery.

Maitreya Bodhisattva: in the middle of the hall facing the gate there is a sculpture of Maitreya in sitting posture, smiling with bare chest and belly. In Buddhism, Maitreya is the Buddhist Messiah, and he is called Ajita, is a disciple of Sykyamuni. He was born in Southern India of a Brahman family. It was said that he lived now in the Tusita heaven, and he would become the next Buddha of this world after the nirvana of Sakyamuni. After Maitreya became Buddha, he would preach Buddha¡¯s teachings for three assemblies under the dragon-flower tree, the bodhi-tree of Maitreya, and save all 9.6 billion people. According to the records of history, his incarnation appeared three times in China. The first time was in the Qi, Liang and Chen periods of the Southern dynasty. He was born in Yiwu of Zhejiang Province, with his name Fu Xi, later called Bodhisattva Fu, and he once preached to Emperor Wudi of the Liang dynasty. The second time, at the end of the Tang dynasty, he was incarnated in Putian of Fujian Province and many legendary stories were left. The third time was in the Liang dynasty of the Five Dynasty Period, i.e. the well-known bag monk. His dharma name was Qi Ci, and his parents called him Changtingzi. He was fat and always carried a bag on his back. All the things people offered him he put in the bag, while no one saw him once take anything out of it, and the bag was always empty. If a man asked him questions about Buddhist dharma, he would put down his bag. If the man did not understand his meaning and asked him again, he would lift up his bag and leave immediately without turning back his head. If the man still could not understand him, he would be convulsed with laughter. His image was so unique, and before his death, he left one hymn, ¡°The Maitreya is the real Maitreya, but with numerous incarnations, he is always before people, but no one knows him.¡± Therefore, he was regarded later as the incarnation of Maitreya and people modeled the monk with a bag to sculpture the Maitreya.
