The Hall of the Four Deva-kings

Weituo Bodhisattva:Behind the Maitreya sculpture stands a sculpture of Weituo. He is a deva and guardian of Buddhism. He holds a vajra in his hand, appearing ferocious and strong, and guards the monastery. It is recorded in the Buddhist sutra that the real identity of Weituo is Indra, the lord of the Trayastrimsas. The four deva-kings are at his command. Sakyamuni shows special favor for him, and very often explains dharma to him only. After the nirvana of Sakyamuni, he ignores exhortations and obtains Sakyamuni¡¯s teeth and put them in a shrine in heaven. He claims that Sakyamuni promised him before his nirvana. Weituo Bodhisattva often appears in a form of heavenly god in gold armor in order to conquer the evils and heretics, that is why Wei Tuo is a guardian of Buddhist dharma.

The Four Deva-kings:On the two sides of the Deva-kings Hall are four devas, whom common people call four maharajas or divine generals. According to the Buddhist sutra Collected Exposition to the Real Story, the four deva-kings are born on the hill of the famous Mount Sumeru of ancient India, where there is a mountain called Gandhara. There are four peaks of the mountain, called the four precious peaks of Mount Sumeru. They are 3360,000 li high. ¡°They are made of four treasures, gold in the east, silver in west, colored glaze in the south and agate in the north. Each deva lives on one peak.¡± The four deve-kings guard respectively Purva-videha, Apara-godaniya, Jambudvipa and Uttarakuru. Therefore, the four deva-kings are also called the four guardians of the world. The four deva-kings have 91 sons each, they assist the four devas to guard the ten directions: east, west, south, north, southeast, southwest, northeast, northwest, up and down.

It is recorded that there are eight generals as assistants of the four deva-kings to command minor deities of their mountains, rivers and forests. The supreme commander of them is Weituo, who guards Buddhist disciples, therefore they pay special respect for him.
