The Hall of the Four Deva-kings

The names of the four deva-kings:

The East Deva, Dhrtarastra, who keeps his kingdom, is dressed in white and armor with a pipa in his hand. Dhrtarastra is the name in Sanskrit, ¡°keep his kingdom¡± means that he is compassionate and protects all living creatures. It is said that he can protect the land of a country and its neighbors. He is unique for he holds a pipa in his hand, which means he wants to convert people into Buddhism with music.

¡¤The South Deva of increase and growth, Virudhaka, is dressed in blue and armor with a treasured sword in his hand. He lives on the hillside of the south of Mount Sumeru. Virudhaka, a word in Sanskrit, means increase. It is said that he mainly leads Kumbhandas and Pretas to guard the south continent. He can order the living creatures to increase their kindness and to guards Buddhist dharma.

¡¤The West Deva of broad eyes, called Virupaksa, is dressed in red and armors with a dragon coiling around his arm. Virupaksa in Sanskrit means broad eyes. He can observe the world with his clean-heaven eyes and protect people. He is the lord of nagas, and guardian of the West, therefore, a dragon curls around his arm (some says it is a red rope). If anybody does not believe in Buddhism, he will catch him with the red rope and forces him to convert into Buddhism.

¡¤The North deva, called Vaisravana, is dressed in green and armors with a precious umbrella in his right hand and a divine mouse¡ªsilver mouse in his left hand. Vaisravana in Sanskrit means hears much and well versed. It means that happiness and virtue are known far and wide. He holds an umbrella in his right hand, which means happiness and virtues and it can be used to conquer evils and guard the wealth of Purvavideha.
